Focus and Scope

The International Journal of Traditional Arts is an international, peer-reviewed gold open access journal that promotes a broad-ranging understanding of the relevance of traditional arts in contemporary social life. The journal publishes leading and robust scholarship on traditional arts from around the world with a focus on the contemporary policy and practice of traditional music, dance, drama, oral narrative and crafts. We define ‘traditional arts’ as artistic and creative practices that function as a marker of identity for a particular cultural group and that have grown out of their oral tradition or that have been newly created using characteristics derived from oral tradition. We are interested in publishing high quality scholarship from ethnomusicology, cultural sociology, anthropology, ethnology, ethnochoreology, cultural policy, folklore, musicology, cultural studies, cultural economics, heritage and tourism studies that focuses upon contemporary policy and practice in the traditional arts.

Peer Review Process

The International Journal for Traditional Arts operates on a Gold Open Access double blind peer-review basis. This peer review process therefore supports the highest international standards of scholarship whilst providing an outlet to the widest possible global audience. "Gold" open access implies free to read to anyone in the world from the initial date of publication with no embargo period in perpetuity.

Upon submission, all manuscripts will initially be screened by the Editors to establish that they meet the focus and scope of the journal. Manuscripts that the editors feel are worthy of going forward for peer review, will undergo a rigorous, double-blind peer-review process, throughout which anonymity of both contributor and reviewers will be maintained. A submitted manuscript will be sent out to at least two reviewers, selected by the journal's Editors. Reviewers will be selected for their scholarly expertise, and any relationship with the manuscript's author(s) in terms of either (i) institution or (ii) recently co-authored projects will be considered by the editors before contracting an expert reviewer. Ideally, the editors will identify reviewers with as little recent professional contact with the author(s) as possible, to mitigate against the potential for bias or conflicts of interest.

Reviewers will be requested to return their report on the manuscript within three weeks of receipt, but may request an extension of this period if necessary. See Instructions for reviewers for more information.
